High Density and Reliability Achieved with 2-Layer Rigid PCB for Automotive Applications
A new 2-layer rigid PCB has been shipped by Bicheng PCB Co. Ltd. This PCB is designed to be used in automotive applications where high density, reliability and temperature tolerance are required.
RO4003C hydrocarbon ceramic laminates are used for the PCB. These laminates are known to provide high thermal conductivity and temperature endurance. An approved lead-free process was utilized, ensuring the board complies with environmental regulations restricting lead and hazardous materials. The PCB can withstand temperatures ranging from -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for under-hood automotive applications.
A basic 2-layer configuration was adopted with 35um finished copper layers and an 8 mil (0.203mm) thin RO4003C dielectric. This provides rigidity and space efficiency. Minimum trace/space of 4/4 mils and 0.2mm hole size allow tightly packed component placement. Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold surface finish was applied to enhance solderability and corrosion resistance.
Careful stackup planning and engineering enabled the placement of 16 components in the compact 61mm x 32mm footprint. 18 total pads include 11 through-hole and 7 surface mount pads. 19 plated through vias connect the top and bottom layers. 100% electrical testing was performed to ensure reliability.
Potential uses for this board include engine control modules, sensor interfaces and diagnostic tools, where high performance in harsh conditions is required. The lead-free and RoHS compliant design also makes it suitable for applications subject to environmental regulations.
