On July 27, IPC released the June 2023 survey results of its North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistics Program. Book-to-bill ratio was 0.98.
In June 2023, total North American PCB shipments decreased by 15.8% compared with the same month last year. Compared with the previous month, shipments fell 0.8% in June.
PCB bookings in June were down 7.7% from a year earlier. Bookings rose 0.2% in June from the previous month.
"PCB order shipments improved in June as shipments slowed and orders improved for the second month in a row, but the trend for the year remains one of slower order flow," said IPC chief economist Shawn DuBravac.
The Trend of PCB Order-to-Bill Ratio in North America
The growth trend of total sales and orders of PCB in North America
It is understood that the order-to-bill ratio is calculated by dividing the value of orders in the past three months by the sales of the IPC survey sample companies in the same period. A ratio above 1.00 shows that current demand exceeds supply, which is a positive indicator of sales growth over the next three to twelve months. Ratios less than 1.00 indicate the opposite.
The year-over-year and year-to-date growth rates provide the most meaningful view on industry growth. Month-to-month comparisons should be made with caution because they reflect seasonal effects and short-term fluctuations. Since bookings tend to be more volatile than shipments, monthly changes in the bookings-to-shipment ratio may not be significant unless there is a clear trend for more than three consecutive months. It is also important to consider changes in bookings and shipments to understand what is driving changes in book-to-bill ratios.
IPC's monthly PCB industry statistics are based on data provided by a representative sample of manufacturers of rigid PCBs and flexible circuits selling in the United States and Canada. IPC publishes PCB order-to-bill ratio at the end of each month.
